Myths of Pool Care and What You Need to Know About
Stabilized Chlorine and Chlorine Lock

For swimming pool water to be hygienically safe for swimmers, it must be properly sanitized. Chlorine, available in different forms, remains the most common method of achieving this.
       Even though chlorine has been used in pools for more than 80 years, there have been technological improvements to ‘stabilize’ it so it can be used more economically. Unfortunately, the regular unstabilized granular sort tends to break down in sunlight after a few hours, forcing pool owners to spend more time and money keeping their pools sanitized.

Use Less Chlorine

Increased stability means you use less and the chlorine you use is protected from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This, in turn, allows for more consistent residuals in the pool, providing a safe, bacteria- and algae-free environment for you and your family to swim in … a built in ‘sunscreen’ which allows it to maintain its effectiveness for up to 12 hours or more.
 It is a proven fact that pools using stabilized pool care systems use less chlorine than unstabilized systems, resulting in a tremendous saving for you – by reducing chemical costs, in reducing labor costs and in time saved! Furthermore, the stabilized sort is easier to use. It dissolves completely in the pool and will not cloud the water. It is also an extremely effective sanitizer, killing bacteria and algae.

Myths About Stabilized Chlorine

Over the years a large number of swimming pool owners have been scared away from the use of stabilized chlorine by the myths of over-stabiliztion and dreaded ’chlorine lock’. Critics of the stabilized variety claim that if you use too much of it, or if you use it for too long, the stabilizer will ‘tie up’ the chlorine and make it unavailable for effective sanitation. Many scientific studies have been done and show that this is not true.
In fact the most popular sanitizer in the USA, which has the largest number of pools in the world, is stabilized chlorine and this is for very good reasons – economy and healthy pool water.

Two levels. Located at the bottom of a flight of steps leading from the house, a two tiered pool features a small spurting fountain and spillway which pours water from one pool to the other.

A number of companies manufacture this for use in swimming pools. However, when BioGuard begins research into new products, a great deal of importance is placed on whether a product is effective, easy to use and cost effective – and this is an interesting approach for pool owners. They say that their intention is to make owning a pool a pleasant experience without it being a drain on your time  or your pocket.

The BioGuard range of pool santizers is not limited to the stabilized variety; it includes floaters and granules as well. But stablized chlorine is certainly the most effective sanitizer and bactericide.

What Is Cyanuric Acid

There is also considerable hype about cyanuric acid which is contained in stabilized chlorines. The reality is that the cyanuric acid IS pool stabilizer. This is a unique chemical that is able to stabilize chlorine against the effects of sunlight. The way it works is to produce a very weak, temporary chemical bond between the stabilizer and the chlorine in the water. These constantly attach and un-attach itself from the stabilizer and is constantly available for sanitation (i.e to kill bacteria). But at the same time, the stabilizer prevents the sun’s UV rays from breaking down the chlorine.

Cyanuric acid allows all of the Cl added to the water to be available for disinfecting and it presents no known health hazards.

  • It does not accumulate in body tissues;
  • It is not carcinogenic (cancer-causing);
  • It is not toxic;

It does not cause Cl lock, or over-stabilization.

The bottom line is that cyanuric acid (stablizer) is able to save you money by reducing chemical costs, in reducing labor costs and in time! Why not try it?
