Stabilised Chlorine and Chlorine Lock
For swimming pool water to be hygienically safe for swimmers, it must be properly sanitized. Chlorine, available in different forms, remains the most common method of achieving this.
Even though it has been used in pools for more than 80 years, there have been technological improvements to ‘stabilize’ chlorine so it can be used more economically. Unfortunately, regular unstabilised granular chlorine tends to break down in sunlight after a few hours, forcing pool owners to spend more time and money keeping their pools sanitised.
Increased stability means you use less chlorine and the chlorine you use is protected from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This, in turn, allows for more consistent chlorine residuals in the pool, providing a safe, bacteria- and algae-free environment for you and your family to swim in … a built in ‘sunscreen’ which allows it to maintain its effectiveness for up to 12 hours or more.
It is a proven fact that pools using stabilized pool care systems use less chlorine than unstabilized systems, resulting in a tremendous saving for you – by reducing chemical costs, in reducing labour costs and in time saved! Furthermore, stabilized chlorine is easier to use. It dissolves completely in the pool and will not cloud the water. It is also an extremely effective sanitiser, killing bacteria and algae.
Over the years a large number of swimming pool owners have been scared off the use of stabilized chlorine by the myths of over-stabilisztion and dreaded ’chlorine lock’. Critics of stabilized chlorine claim that if you use too much of it, or if you use it for too long, the stabilizer will ‘tie up’ the chlorine and make the chlorine unavailable for effective sanitation. Many scientific studies have been done and show that this is not true.
In fact the most popular sanitizer in the USA, which has the largest number of pools in the world, is stabilized chlorine and this is for very good reasons – economy and healthy pool water.
A number of companies manufacture chlorine for use in swimming pools. The way it works is to produce a very weak, temporary chemical bond between the stabilizer and the chlorine in the water. The chlorine constantly attaches and unattaches itself rom the stabilizer and is constantly available for sanitation (i.e to kill bacteria). But at the same time, the stabilizer prevents the sun’s UV rays from breaking down the chlorine.
Cyanuric acid allows all of the chlorine added to the water to be available for disinfecting and it presents no known health hazards.
It does not accumulate in body tissues;
It is not carcinogenic (cancer-causing);
It is not toxic;
It does not cause chlorine lock, or over-stabilization.
